3 Important Tips on How to Teach Your Child to Read

1) A phonics-based approach is the easiest.
You may have done a little research on all the methods available for teaching reading. You also might have noticed that many of the online programs have a variety of learning levels, games & activities, and sounds, whistles, cartoons and—well, NOISE. Perhaps you feel overwhelmed and are having a difficult time deciding what your child needs and where to start. Why not keep it easy? A simple, phonics-based approach is a linear process. First you teach the sound of each letter, then you add those sounds together to make words. Then you move on to more advanced sounds and add those together to make words. At this point, your child is pretty much getting it, and beginning to read LOTS of words. Pretty easy, wouldn't you say?

2) Learning to read doesn't have to take a long time.
This is one of the 3 important tips on how to teach your child to read that will put your mind at ease. Unless a child is challenged by other issues (e.g. eye issues, learning issues, etc.), most children learn to read pretty quickly, as long as the instruction is taught in a straight-forward, linear way. Keep it simple and let your child set the pace. You will be surprised how quickly he learns. Within weeks your child will be reading words, within a few months, many children become independent readers.

3) Commit to a regular schedule.
If your child is between the ages of 3-6, lessons should be very short--really short. The lessons in Teach Your Child to Read™ are no more than 5 minutes, some even less. The beauty of such short lessons is that it's easy for you to keep your child on a regular schedule. It's important that the lesson from the day before is fresh in your child's memory so she doesn't feel like she's starting over each time you sit down. Besides, when you keep the lessons short, you'll always leave your child wanting more.

We are living in a unique time where parents have plenty to worry about. That said, teaching your child to read doesn't need to be one of them. Many parents are doing the job on their own with great success, and you can, too!
