CAN I TEACH MY CHILD TO READ? 3 CRITICAL DECISIONS TO MAKE BEFORE YOU START.

Child is wondering
Many parents are asking themselves: "Can I teach my child to read?" The short answer is yes. But before you begin, give some thought as to the BEST way to teach your child to read. With so many programs, methodologies, and opinions out there, you will want to make sure you choose an approach that is well-suited for your child.

Every child is different. After all, some children teach themselves to read, and others struggle to learn, regardless of the method you choose. However, there are some general rules of thumb that make it easier for parents to teach their children to read at home.

3 Decisions to Make When Asking: Can I Teach My Child to Read?

1) Phonics or Something Else?
Some educators are proponents of a systematic phonics approach, while others advocate a hybrid between a variety of methods—phonics, sight reading, reading cues, pictures, etc. After all, children need variety to stay engaged, right? Perhaps. But here's the problem with that. When a program 'jumps around,' children can easily get lost. Once lost, the stress kicks in.

Why not keep it simple? English is a phonetic language that adds sounds together to make words. It's much easier—and faster—to teach children how to do that with a phonics-based approach. Then the real fun begins, because they can read whatever they want to.

2) How Much Time Do You Have?
When you choose a methodology, make sure you have time to follow through. Consistency is key. Children have short attention spans, and you have a thousand other things you have to take care of. The lessons in our program are 5 minutes or less, so busy parents can commit to a regular schedule throughout the week.

3) Should You Use an Online Program?
Given the nature of how school is currently being conducted in many parts of the world, a significant number of parents are leaning toward online programs. Particularly online phonics programs. While online teaching can be effective, it's important that it's interactive. Please don't plant your child in front of a screen and expect him or her to learn! Ideally, your reading lessons are time you can share.
