Trying to Compare Online Phonics Programs? 3 Key Things You Want to Check for When You Shop

With so many options to choose from, many parents are wondering: "Are online phonics programs the same?" The short answer is no. But when you're researching programs, it's important to know what's different about each of them so you can choose the right one for you and your family.

As you work your way through the available online phonics programs, look for explanations of how each program works. Often times, you will see a long list of features, but it's not clear what actually happens when you and your child sit down in front of the screen.

While you shop, be sure to ask yourself the three questions below. And if a particular program has no option for a free trial, go on to the next one!

Ready to Compare Online Phonics Programs? 3 Questions to Ask Yourself When Choosing

1) Do you want to work WITH your children, or do you want them to teach themselves?
Many of the online phonics programs are designed for children to spend time with by themselves. These programs might include games, phonemic awareness activities, and reading exercises. While some children may be motivated by a self-guided tour while learning to read, many aren't. If you continually need to insert yourself into the process, you may find it becomes complicated.

2) How important is interactive learning to you?
Even though children love to be entertained—and can easily be transfixed in front of a screen—if an online phonics program uses cartoons or videos to teach reading, you might find that your child gets used to being 'spoon-fed' knowledge. With a fully-interactive program, children become engaged in the learning process. Not only do they learn to read, they learn how to learn, which empowers them as they go on to learn new things.

3) Is the learning process step-by-step?
If a program has multiple learning activities and your child begins to 'skip around,' you may find it difficult to make sure the basics are being covered as he or she progresses through the program. Phonics is a sequential, methodical way of teaching reading. It's extremely important that the building blocks are assembled in the right order, or your child may become confused.

The bottom line is, all of the online programs are different. If there is one feature you MUST require in each program, it's that can try it free so you can test it out with your child before purchasing. We'd be delighted if you'd give us a try with our 7 Day Free Trial of Teach Your Child to Read™.
