Wondering How to Teach Your Kids to Read? Just Follow 6 Easy Steps.

dad learns how to teach your kids to read
Wondering how to teach your kids to read? You've come to the right place! Even if you've never taught anyone to read before, we are confident that with a little guidance, you can learn how to teach YOUR kids to read.

For many parents, teaching reading feels daunting. What method should you use? Will your child be willing to work with you? Can you even figure out how to do it? A lot of questions! But the key for you to remember is that every child is different. What may work for one might not work for another.

That said, MOST children learn to read more easily using a phonics-based approach. And the beauty of phonics is that not only is it good for your child, it's good for the teacher, too. Phonics takes a linear, step-by-step approach to teaching reading, which makes it easier for you to follow the instructions. You will also be able to monitor your child for progress, as phonics builds on foundational building blocks that need to be mastered before proceeding to the next step.

We think you'll be pretty excited to find there are only 6 STEPS in Teach Your Child to Read™. Take a look below to find out how easy it is to figure out how to teach your kids to read when you only need to learn 6 STEPS.

6 Easy Steps: How to Teach Your Kids to Read

STEP 1
Since phonics is a sound-based approach to teaching reading, in STEP 1 you will teach your child the sound of each letter. No need to teach the names of the letters—throughout the program, we refer to the letters by their sounds, not their names. Also, if you are unsure of how to pronounce the sound of each letter yourself, you will want to choose a reading program that has an audio component.
STEP 2
After your child has learned the sound of each letter, you will 'add' sounds together to sound out words. Once your child can do this, he or she will officially be a reader. Furthermore, your child will understand the concept of building words with sounds, which is foundational in a phonics-based approach.

STEP 3
STEP 3 resembles STEP 1 in that in this step, your child will learn more sounds. However, this time your child will learn blended sounds, like 'ch, sh, and th.' No need to worry that your child will get confused and accidentally read the sounds separately. When letters are presented as blends, that's how your child will see them.
STEP 4
After your child can recognize all the blends in STEP 4, you will be amazed how many words your child will be able to read. (Literally thousands.) At this point, your child will combine the sounds of blends and individual letters to sound out new words. And since this process was already mastered in STEP 1, this step tends to come pretty easily.
STEP 5
Now it's time for your child to learn the rule of the silent vowel. Recognizing what a silent vowel does to a word can be a little tricky, which is why we added what we call 'the sleeping baby' technique. You will find that Teach Your Child to Read™ audio guide makes it easy for you and your child to follow along.
STEP 6
You will LOVE STEP 6! In this step, your child is ready to read books. If you are using our program, we have created 10 eStorybooks for your child to read aloud to you. If you are using your own method, you will want to introduce some easy readers, like The BOB Books or Dr. Seuss.
