Looking for a Reading Program for Preschoolers? 5 Tips for Choosing the Right One.

Are you looking for a reading program for preschoolers? You've come to the right place. We think a phonics-based approach is the best way to teach preschoolers to read, which is why our program is easy, sequential, and lessons are very short.

If at all possible, wait until your child is at least three years of age before getting started. While many children appear to be ready sooner, introducing reading concepts before the age of three is most likely going to yield few results. Besides, at that age, little ones are busy learning about the world in more tactile ways. Have fun together while you teach your child to read,

And be sure to take it slow! Even if your child is having fun learning to read, introduce each new concept only when he or she is ready. What follows are 5 TIPS to make the most out of your teaching time with your child.

5 Tips for Choosing a Reading Program for Preschoolers

1) When to Start
Every child is different. As a parent, YOU are the best person to decide if your child is ready to learn. Are your child's language skills up to age-level? Can she sit still and focus for at least 3-4 minutes at a time? Are there other developmental skills he may be struggling with? If you have a curious youngster who's excited to learn, go for it. But please don't push it if your child isn't ready. You'll know!

2) How Fast to Go
A three or four-year old will naturally take longer than an older child to advance through a reading program for preschoolers. Please let your child set the pace. It may takes weeks—or months—for your child to grasp some of the concepts, but that doesn't matter. Mastery of even basic phonics principles will give your child a head start when he or she enters school.

3) Environment
Make sure your child is well-fed, dry, and not sleepy when you sit down to work on your lessons. Little ones are easily distracted by bodily cues, so make sure your child is physically comfortable before you begin.

4) Un-Lessons
Please don't test your preschooler! Learning to read unfolds more naturally when you focus on process, not progress. Let your child set the pace and be prepared to put the materials away for stretches at a time if you need to. If your child senses you are anxious about his or her completing a reading program for preschoolers, you might find your child becomes a reluctant pupil rather quickly.

5) Bragging
If at all possible, avoid showing-off your child's new skills to friends, aunts and uncles, and grandparents. It's tempting, we know! But learning to read is personal, as it is the gateway to exciting ideas that will mold your child into an empowered adult. We want your child to internalize the accomplishment as his or her own, and not as a performance that needs someone else's approval to be of value.
