"Why Should I Teach My Child to Read?" 3 Reasons to Ask this Question NOW.

If you have a first-grader or kindergartner, you might be wondering: "Why should I teach my child to read?" Even without the added responsibility of monitoring your child's online schooling, there are a lot of good reasons for you to at least entertain the idea. After reading the 3 key reasons below, you might even find yourself moving a little closer to: "Hmm. Maybe I SHOULD teach my child to read."

But first, you need to know that you can teach your child to read. If you have been relying too heavily on an overburdened school system to do the job, be assured that teaching your child to read is indeed something you can do at home. This applies whether or not your child is physically attending school, homeschooled, or temporarily participating in school online.

So let's take a look at 3 critical reasons you may want to assume some (or most) of the responsibility of teaching your child to read.

"Why Should I Teach My Child to Read?" 3 Good Reasons.

Girl wonders how can i teach my child how to read?
1)  Methodology Used by School Systems: You're probably aware that for the past 50 years or so, there has been a pretty heated debate about what is the best way to teach a child to read. We've seen whole language, sight-reading, using clues and context, phonics, and a mixture of all of them. Many school systems have adopted a custom approach, presenting reading skills by using a variety of methods. Sounds good to have choices, right? In theory, maybe so. But many children are easily confused by all of the options and are failing to become strong, independent readers as a result. And if your child IS struggling, the school system may not have the resources to identify and address your child's needs.
2) Best Way to Teach a Child to Read: Science tells us that a systematic, phonics-based approach is the best way for most children to learn to read, an approach that many school systems abandoned two generations ago. Your child's teacher may tell you he or she is using phonics, which is most likely true. Most methodologies spend some time on learning the sounds of the letters. However, a truly phonics-based approach is about teaching the code of the English language—all of it, from start to finish. Once your child knows the code, he won't need to rely on clues, context, pictures, or memory to read harder and harder materials. As a phonetic reader, your child will know how to sound out almost every word.

Teach Your Child to Read™ is a phonics-based program for children ages 3-6. Try it 7 DAYS for free, and you'll see how quickly your child picks up 'the code.'

3) Time to Cherish: Your child will never forget who taught her to read. Reading is a skill that is endemic in almost everything your child does, and as she grows, she will always appreciate that you shared such a treasure with her. Not only will she become an avid reader, she will remember—and cherish—the time the two of you spent together on this most important skill.
So here's the short answer to your question: "Why should I teach my child to read?" The school system may not have the resources to do the job, a phonics-based approach is critical, and you and your child will cherish the time you spend together.

Teach Your Child to Read™ is a child-centered, phonics-based approach. Why not give it a try?
